“When Jen called crying, I knew immediately something was wrong. Jen had been feeling sick for several weeks but neither of us thought about her being pregnant.

It came as a complete surprise. We spent the next three weeks talking about what we should do. Neither of us was ready to make a serious commitment to each other…let alone to raise a child. We hated to tell our parents as we knew how upset they would be. 

We talked to an adoption counselor first and she said many families were waiting who couldn’t have children. After looking at different families we chose Dave and Michale.  They were both school teachers and had been waiting for three years to adopt. We decided not to meet them in person but we talked on the phone several times.

It was easier telling our families when we had a plan and could show them who would be our child’s adoptive parents. I think it was really hard for our parents…they said they would support our decision and they thought we were being very mature.  It was really hard when it came time to leave her at the hospital…but we knew we made the right decision for her”.
